The Dirty Facts

Entrance matting is the perfect lead-in product for a ‘green’ operation. Entrance mats capture and hold dirt and debris, improve indoor air quality, and reduce the migration of dirt throughout a facility.

Did you know?
  • 30 tons of dirt & grit fall on a city the size of London each year.
  • 80% of all the dirt, dust and grit that enters a building comes in on people’s feet.
  • 40% of any cleaning budget is used to clean floors.
  • 9 out of 10 systems failures are caused by dirt accumulation.
Performance/Safety
  • 30% of dirt is left behind on the first 3 feet of mat
  • High performance mats capture 85% to 95% of soil
  • One 4’ x 6’ entrance mat can capture and hold up to 15 pounds of dirt
  • 42% judge a facility’s cleanliness by their floors and carpet appearance
15 Foot Rule

15 Foot Rule

The U.S. Green Building Council and the Carpet and Rug Institute recommend that at least 15 feet of matting is needed to remove the majority of dirt and debris from foot traffic. 80% of all moisture, dirt and debris are brought into a facility on the soles of shoes. A mat that is at least 15 feet long ensures that each foot will make contact with the matting at least 3 times, providing adequate scraping and drying to stop most dirt and moisture at the entrance.
